Join Us!
We are actively seeking motivated graduate (PhD and MS) and undergraduate students to join our research group! If you have any questions, reach out to Mark at myzhao@colorado.edu.
Research Areas
Our group works on computer systems for machine learning. We apply a broad set of systems techniques to advance modern AI infrastructure. Some research topics include:
- Machine learning data infrastructure
- Systems support for robotics
- Resource-efficient LLM training and inference
- Serving frameworks for agentic AI systems
- Systems support for secure machine learning pipelines
Process
We’re always excited to welcome students and collaborators who love to build things. Students should have a strong foundation in computer systems (e.g., OS, databases, computer architecture, networking, etc.) and a deep interest in machine learning applications. We believe that research thrives in a supportive, collaborative, and intellectually curious environment, and we strive to foster a culture that reflects these values while keeping things fun.
Prospective PhD Students: Apply to the CU Boulder CS PhD program and mention your interest in working with Prof. Mark Zhao in the application form.
Current CU Boulder MS or PhD Students: Taking Mark’s CSCI 7000 Topics class (Systems for Machine Learning) is a great way to get started on research. Please also email Mark and attach a copy of your CV.
We periodically hire hourly MS research assistants after they have become involved with an ongoing project. Please see this posting.
CU Boulder Undergraduates: Reach out to Mark and share a bit about yourself and your interests.
If you do not fall into any of these categories, or you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out!
